Why Football needs Respect.

The FA is responding to a plea from grassroots football to tackle unacceptable behaviour in football.

Respect aims to bring the fun back to football for young players to abuse. Parents and coaches pushing too hard and pressurising impressionable children for three points is having a negative impact on their development and enjoyment of the game.

Respect also aims to tackle the mass drop-out of referees from football due to abuse. 7,000 referee's dropped out of the game last season which has led to the number of match officals hitting it lowest ever level.

  • 98% of referees have been verbally abused.
  • 27% of referees have been physically abused
  • 1 in 3 grassroots matches is now played without a qualified match offical
  • 846 grassroots matches were abandoned due to unacceptable behaviour from players or spectators.

Respect - Parents and coaches want to see role models in the elite game to provide a positive examples to young players.

Respect - The No2 proirity from grassroot football is tackling "pushy parents" placing too much pressure on their child and their child's team from the sidelines.

Genuine quote's heard at local games: Coaches half time team talk: " there's 11 players over their, all made of bone - break them": Parent to a teenage female ref aged 14 -"you only want to ref, so you can get the boys phone numbers" : Coach to his player after losing - " as you did not play today, dont bother coming back"

Parkwood Respect Strategy

At Parkwood Rangers we are adopting a four step strategy, which is being piloted by our under 16 girls, this season, and will be rolled out across all teams for the start of the new season.

The Four Steps to Respect

  • Step 1: Code of Conducts: All players. coaches & parents to sign a code of conduct
  • Step 2: Designated Spectator Areas: All home games are to have a clearly marked out Spectator area.
  • Step 3: Captain taking Resposibility: Captains only speak to the referee on the teams behalf during the game.
  • Step 4: Allow the referee control the game.

Which Muppet would you prefer your child to see on a Sunday ?

The Real Muppets or A Right Muppet

Fact:: If six people shout at once, the brain will act on the first command,

If that command is wrong the player will make the wrong decision.

That is why smart coahes keep their arms folded & use hand gestures during the game.

Shouting at players is pointless

A Young Players Dream

"I want to be captain"

"I want to score the winner"

"I want to play at Wembley"

"I want the crowd to chant my name"

"I want my dad to stop shouting at me."

If your doing it then : "Stop it you Muppet"
